Watermelon is a native of Africa’s arid and semi-arid regions and is now cultivated throughout the world from the searing tropics to temperate latitudes and even beyond. With their colorful flesh and luscious sweet juice, watermelons have been called the food of heaven. The main types of watermelon grown in Africa are All Sweet, Crimson Sweet, Super Small, and Seedless varieties. The other varieties include Sugar Sweet, Charleston, Congo, Sugar Baby, Moon and Stars, Daytona, Sensei, White Wonder, Yellow Petite, and Starlight.
Watermelon is mostly enjoyed fresh or juiced, however, it is also used to make salads and the rind is used in jams and preserves. Watermelon is high in Vitamin C, A, B1, B5, and B6 as well as Potassium and Magnesium. Its high water content keeps you hydrated and has certain compounds that help prevent cancer.
